Position Details: The Departments of Microbiology and Crop and Soil Science at Oregon State University are pleased to announce the availability of a Postdoctoral scholar research position in microbial ecology with a focus on nitrogen cycling in soils. This position will extend professional training for a candidate who has recently graduated with a Ph.D. in Microbiology or equivalent research field. The successful candidate will receive an academic appointment as a Postdoctoral scholar under the advisement of Dr. Ryan Mueller and other members of the research team.
The successful applicant will be involved in an NSF-funded research project that will use mass spectrometry-based proteomics techniques to examine mechanisms of microbial turnover of protein material in soils. Specific activities will involve:
- The collaborative development of efficient and universal protein extraction methods from various classes of soils.
- Preparing for field campaigns, managing physical samples, and conducting shortterm soil incubation experiments aimed at monitoring the turnover of proteinaceous material under several defined experimental conditions.
- Working with collaborators at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) to apply mass spectrometry-based proteomics methods in order to analyze protein samples extracted from soils. Travel by the successful applicant to ORNL for training and processing of samples is expected.
- Collecting, maintaining, organizing, and analyzing data pertaining to the experiments conducted.
- Synthesizing the results of all data analyses in the form of conference presentations, written progress reports, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
- Participation in teaching and outreach activities aimed at disseminating information about soil science and environmental proteomics to diverse audiences.
Candidates are required to have an advanced degree (Ph.D. required) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field that has been awarded within the last five years. General qualifications include a demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, a capacity to train and supervise graduate and undergraduate student researchers, and demonstrated oral and written communication skills. This Postdoctoral scholar position will be an initial 12-month appointment (per OSU requirements) and may be renewed annually on a fiscal year basis for the duration of the
project, so long as the postdoctoral scholar is within five years from receipt of the doctoral degree. Full funding for research expenditures, stipend, and benefits is available for this position through 2018, with an expected start date during the summer of 2016. The appointment is a full-time (1.00 FTE) position and is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic and/or research career. Recruitment for this position is open to all qualified applicants.
